Wanshou Temple is located outside the east gate of the ancient city of Liyang. It was first built in the first year of Changqing in the Tang Dynasty (821 AD). Its original name was Zisheng Courtyard and it has a history of more than a thousand years. In the fifth year of Taiping Xingguo in the Song Dynasty (976 AD), it was renamed Guangjiao Temple. In the early years of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty, Monk Xingjian promoted Buddhist teachings here. Later, Monk Xiaotang greatly developed the Linji school of Zen Buddhism. During the reign of Emperor Kangxi, it was renamed Wanshou Temple. Since then, it has become widely known. Monks and laypeople gather here and the incense is flourishing. It is quite influential in the local area and surrounding regions. Therefore, it is also called Dong Temple by the people.
