In 1415, during the Yongle era of the Ming Dynasty, Chen Xuan, who held the position of the Grand Commandant for Transport, carved an extraordinary canal along the ancient route of the Beisong Dynasty’s Shahe River. This is the famous Qingjiangpu Canal. The opening of Qingjiangpu was of great significance for the smooth transportation along the entire canal and for establishing the central city status of Huai’an during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, which led to Huai’an being known as the ‘Canal Capital’.
