The Huangpu River, known as the ‘Mother River’ of Shanghai, divides the city into two distinct areas, Pudong and Puxi, each forming renowned landmarks such as the Bund and the financial hub of Lujiazui. A visit to Shanghai is incomplete without witnessing the splendid night scene along the Huangpu River, where you can also take a cruise to enjoy the panoramic views of both banks. Spanning approximately 113 kilometers with a width ranging from 300 to 700 meters, the Huangpu River flows through various districts of Shanghai, serving as a symbol and showcase of the city’s urban landscape.
Both the Bund and the Riverside Promenade offer excellent vantage points. The Riverside Promenade tends to be less crowded compared to the Bund. Strolling along the riverbank, the contrast between the Bund’s historical architecture, rich in exotic styles, and the modern skyscrapers on the east bank tells the story of Shanghai’s development over the past century. The night view of the Huangpu River is a must-see. As night falls, the banks of the Huangpu River light up with a dazzling display. You can embark from the Shiliupu Wharf on Zhongshan East Second Road in Huangpu District and take a Huangpu River cruise, enjoying the unobstructed views of the scenery along the way. The Yangpu and Nanpu Bridges spanning the river, the classic Waibaidu Bridge resembling a jade belt, the picturesque Pudong Riverside Promenade, and the uniquely designed Shanghai International Convention Center, all illuminated by vibrant lights, form a stunning visual feast that captivates the eyes.
Onboard services include Chinese, Western, and buffet meals, allowing you to savor delicious food while admiring the river’s beauty. The cruise operates daily from 11:00 to 21:30, with hourly departures from 11:00 to 13:00 and half-hourly departures from 13:00 to 21:30. Each cruise lasts approximately 60 minutes. For a more economical and nostalgic experience, the ferry between Pudong and Puxi is also a great option to appreciate the charm of the Huangpu River. The ferry runs between the Jinling East Road Ferry Terminal next to the Bund and the Dongchang Road Ferry Terminal in Pudong, operating from 7:00 to 22:00, with a journey of about ten minutes and a frequency of every 15 minutes. There is also a ferry service between the Fuxing East Road Ferry Terminal and the Dongchang Road Ferry Terminal, with the Fuxing East Road Ferry Terminal operating from 7:00 to 19:00 and the Dongchang Road Ferry Terminal from 7:00 to 18:45, with departures every half hour. The Huangpu River is open all year round, accessible 24/7.
