No. 288, Wuyuan Road is an ordinary alley. No. 3 in the alley is a modern independent garden residence. The famous cartoonist Zhang Leping lived here for more than fifty years and created a large number of artworks here. Among them, a number of “Sanmao’s comeback” works such as “Sanmao Learning from Lei Feng” and “Sanmao Loves Science” were also born here. Looking into the alley at No. 288, Wuyuan Road, a whole wall of “Sanmao mural” is eye-catching.
The four-frame comic style presents the classic “Sanmao” image all the way. The black fence leads people to the depths of the alley. Beside the dark log gate, the wooden doorplate with the words “Former Residence of Zhang Leping” stands out with simplicity and color. A wisteria beloved by Zhang Leping climbs from the garden on the first floor to the balcony on the second floor. A life-size sculpture of Sanmao in new clothes stands in a corner of the garden. Originally, two families lived in this building. Mr. Zhang Leping’s family lived on the second floor, which is the appearance of the living space presented now. The first floor is naturally made into a literature exhibition. The exhibition hall on the first floor is only over a hundred square meters. In this space of more than a hundred square meters, four exhibition halls, namely Centennial Leping, Master’s Cartoons, Selected Gems from the Art Garden, and Friends Drawing Me, are arranged and presented. There are abundant literature and physical materials to overview the important nodes of the master’s life. In the living space on the second floor, tourists can enter and view Mr. Zhang Leping’s study, bedroom, and the bedrooms of his children.Opening hours: Open from 10:00 to 16:30 on Tuesdays, Thursdays to Saturdays throughout the year; closed all day on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Sundays throughout the year.
