The University of Science and Technology of China was founded in Beijing in September 1958. Its establishment is known as a major event in the history of education and science in China. After its establishment, the Chinese Academy of Sciences implemented the school-running policy of ‘the whole academy running the school and integrating departments with institutes’. The school closely set up departments and majors around the emerging scientific and technological fields urgently needed by the country, creatively combined science with engineering, that is, cutting-edge science with high-tech, paid attention to basic course teaching, had a high starting point and a wide caliber, and cultivated scientific and technological talents in emerging, marginal and interdisciplinary disciplines.
In the second year after its establishment, it was listed as a national key university. In early 1970, the school was relocated to Hefei City, Anhui Province and began its second entrepreneurship. After 1978, the school was determined to reform and boldly innovate. It took the lead in proposing and implementing a series of educational reform measures with innovative spirit and forward-looking consciousness in the country, such as establishing juvenile classes, establishing the first graduate school, building large scientific projects, and opening up to the world for running schools. It was quickly restored and developed. Soon it developed into an important base for high-quality talent cultivation and high-level scientific research. Since the 1990s, the school has actively adapted to the requirements and challenges of domestic and foreign science and technology, education and social and economic development, earnestly implemented the Outline of China’s Education Reform and Development, vigorously promoted teaching and scientific research reform and structural adjustment, and carried out the third entrepreneurship.
