Chikan is known far and near for its ancient buildings with a combination of Chinese and Western styles and the simple folk customs. Among them, the ancient buildings with unique styles on Dīxī Road are particularly famous. This nearly 400-meter-long building row features a Chinese-Western architectural style. In the early years, overseas Chinese from Chikan in Europe and America brought back architectural drawings from abroad and combined with the local architectural art of Kaiping to build these buildings here. These buildings not only attach importance to beautiful shapes but also consider the sturdiness and practicality of the buildings. Therefore, a large amount of building materials are all imported. While preserving the local traditional architectural style, Western European-style buildings are transplanted on the land of their hometown, forming a unique and culturally rich Chinese-Western architectural complex. Therefore, this area is also called ‘European-style Street’. The more distinctive feature of the European-style Street is the rooftop architecture. Some rooftops are spire-shaped towers, and some have arched canopies protruding from the front wall, with rich shapes. Wall decorations are also diverse, including relief patterns, window forms, moldings, cast iron balcony railings, etc. Some combine Baroque or Rococo architectural decoration styles, and some are Lingnan-style fruits and auspicious patterns as well as Chinese classical scroll patterns.
