Gumuko Site Museum, located in Huai’an City, Jiangsu Province, is a precious museum that carries a history of 2500 years. It was once the northern end of the Han Canal dug by King Fuchai of Wu, marking the boundary between the Grand Canal and the Huai River, and witnessing the prosperity of ancient water transport.
The museum displays numerous Southern Song Dynasty water conservancy engineering sites, including inscribed bricks with the words ‘Huai’an Prefecture’. These precious artifacts not only showcase the sluice and dam hydraulic engineering techniques of the Song and Yuan periods but also complement the history of Huai’an in terms of geography, water conservancy, grain transport, and warfare. Visitors can experience the prosperity and vicissitudes of ancient times here and appreciate the unique charm of Huai’an as a hub of transportation between the north and south, a capital of canals, and an international port.
