The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal’s Pizhou section boasts a broad water surface, abundant fish and shrimp, and a beautiful environment. The banks are lush with vegetation, offering a delightful scenery.
Numerous historical and cultural sites line the canal. Within the canal basin, there are 116 ancient sites and cultural relics, including the 6,000-year-old Dazhongzi site, the Neolithic Dawenkout Culture’s Liulin site, the Spring and Autumn period’s Liangwang City site, and the Warring States period’s Jiunv Dun ancient tomb cluster.
The canal also harbors a wealth of paleontological fossils. In 1988, archaeologists unearthed a pair of ancient ivory tusks here, dating back 400,000 years, representing the Asian Nama elephant’s tusk fossils. Additionally, over ten thousand exquisite artifacts such as painted pottery, bronze ware, jade, and ceramics have been unearthed from these sites.
Traveling upstream, one can witness several distinctively designed bridges, complementing the ancient canal and forming a new cultural landscape. The Longhai Railway Bridge stands like a steel giant over the river, and some memorable scenes from the movies ‘The Great Decisive Battle’ and ‘Wheels Rolling’ were filmed here.
The canal is open all year round, 24 hours a day, with specific opening hours subject to on-site notice at the scenic area.
