In the coastal regions of Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, and Guangxi in China, there lives a unique ethnic group known as the Dan people, who still maintain their traditional way of life. They live on boats and make a living by fishing, with their boats shaped like eggs, hence the name ‘Dan family’. They are also referred to as the ‘Gypsies of the water’. The Zhapo Fisherman’s Culture Exhibition Hall is a cultural exhibition hall based on this fundamental culture.
The Dan people are a special group, but there is no written historical record about their origins, and there is still no definitive and authoritative explanation for their origins. There are various theories such as ‘the ancient Yue people fleeing from the Qin army into the dense forests’, ‘Lu Jia’s defeat and escape into the rivers and lakes’, ‘the remnants of Lu Xun’s party going into the water island’, ‘the Mongols fleeing from the end of the Yuan Dynasty’, and ‘the rich families of Nanxiong Zhuji Lane going bankrupt and falling into decline’, etc. Some also believe that the Dan family, due to their long-term life at sea and struggling with the wind and waves, have developed a unique means of making a living, and their lives are as fragile as eggshells, which is why they are called ‘Dan family’. This is the origin of the Dan family. With the development and progress of society, the Dan family has successively left the wandering life at sea and settled on land, but the oceanic culture of the Dan family has been inherited and promoted. As a branch of the Han nationality, the Dan family, in the process of survival, reproduction, and development and evolution over nearly two thousand years, has been a social group with unyielding self-improvement, strong resistance, and survival capabilities. They have created a vast world along the rivers and coasts. These special water residents hold a certain position in the history of Chinese folk customs.
