Jingzhong Temple is renowned for its antiquity, with a history spanning over 1000 years. During the Southern and Northern Dynasties, Prince Xiao Tong of the Liang Dynasty built the Wenxuan Building here, enriching the cultural heritage of the ancient city of Yangzhou. In the Chen Dynasty, the Tiantai monk constructed the Jizhao Courtyard, allowing Buddhism to take root and flourish in Yangzhou. During the Sui Dynasty, Emperor Yang of Sui listened to lectures here for three months, making this temple famous throughout the land.
Jingzhong Temple is known for its tranquility due to its compact size. This thousand-year-old temple does not occupy a large area and is not built facing mountains and rivers like many other temples, with numerous halls and an expansive view. The temple’s screen wall is connected to the surrounding residences, inscribed with the four golden characters ‘Buddha’s Light Shines Upon All’, partially obscured by the incense burner directly opposite the temple gate. The red temple gate consists of only two doors, flanked by lifelike and endearing stone lions. The entire temple comprises two main structures. One is the Mahavira Hall, which houses statues of Vairocana, Indra, and Brahma. The other is the Sutra Pavilion, which holds important Buddhist scriptures from the Qing Dynasty. In the eastern pond, there is an artificial Taihu stone mountain, atop which sits a lotus throne concealing a dripping jade Guanyin statue. The temple is open all year round from 07:30 to 17:30.Jingzhong Temple – A Historic Buddhist Sanctuary in Yangzhou
