Shi Road, a modern commercial hub comparable to Guanqian Street, is an emerging leisure, dining, and shopping destination outside the ancient city of Suzhou. Originally, the Shi Road area was an external dock of Suzhou, serving as a distribution center connecting Suzhou with external commerce, and has always been a gathering place for merchants. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, Sheng Xuanhuai, a prominent figure of the Westernization Movement, paved the road with stones, hence the name ‘Shi Road’. Today, Shi Road has developed a unique landscape where vehicles travel along the river, and people walk above the water. A tens-of-meters-long, streamline, red landscape wooden bridge without supports undulates between the banks of the Huaiyang River, embodying the charm of Impressionist works and the soft curves of Jiangnan architecture.
On the North Shi Road Square is one of the larger dry fountains in Suzhou. With music, the water columns rise and fall, splashing water in all directions, unpredictable and mesmerizing. The embedded light boxes on the ground radiate light, resembling a constellation of stars. The crisscrossing lights on the ground, in rhythm with the fountain, perform a modern symphony.
The opening hours are year-round, open all day, with specific business status subject to the day’s opening conditions.
