The Rouge Well is located in Jiming Temple on the south side of Xuanwu Lake in Xuanwu District, Nanjing. It is the well of Chen Jingyang Palace in the Southern Dynasties. It is also known as the Humiliation Well and Jingyang Well. In the third year of Chen Zhenming in the Southern Dynasties (589), the Sui army marched southward across the river and captured Taicheng. When Emperor Chen后主 heard the arrival of the army, he and his concubine Zhang Lihua and Kong Guipin jumped into this well. At night, they were captured by the Sui army. Later generations therefore called this well the Humiliation Well. After the Sui and Tang Dynasties, Taicheng was repeatedly destroyed. Jingyang Palace was destroyed, and Jingyang Well was also buried. Later generations erected a well at Jiming Temple on Jilong Mountain to remember the lesson of Emperor Chen后主’s subjugation of the country. Open all year round and open all day. The specific business status is subject to the opening situation on that day.
