Yangliu Village Ancient Architectural Complex is located in Yangliu Village, Hushu Town, Jiangning District. It was originally constructed during the Ming Dynasty and subsequently renovated in the Qing Dynasty during the reigns of Kangxi and Qianlong. Over 400 years ago, a branch of the Zhu family settled in Yangliu Village (then known as Yangliu Village) and gradually became a prominent clan, with nearly half of the village’s buildings constructed by the Zhu family. The architectural complex faces south, with its back to the Ma Chang Mountain and fronting the Yangliu Lake. Originally, there were 36 residential compounds, of which 17 are relatively well-preserved today, comprising 36 sections, 366 rooms, and covering an area of 1.12 hectares. The buildings are characterized by multi-entrance courtyards with high walls and deep yards, among which the largest Yisheng Hall has 7 sections and 18 thresholds. The residential compounds are connected by alleys paved with bluestone. Each compound has a high gate tower, adorned with brick and stone carvings, with a four-character family motto on the lintel. Each main hall also has a name, such as Yisheng Hall, Siben Hall, etc. The rear part of the compounds often features 2-story corridor-connected buildings. The beam structures are carved without painted decorations, maintaining a simple and elegant style. The well-preserved ones are the Lihe Hall, Sichen Hall, and Shude Hall at the west end of the village, which are side by side and interconnected, with a total of 10 sections and 115 rooms, built by Zhu Houchang during the Qianlong period. Yangliu Village Ancient Architectural Complex is one of the largest surviving Ming and Qing Dynasty residential complexes in the Nanjing area. It is open all year round, 24/7, with specific business hours subject to the daily opening status of the site.
