Xia Ma Fang Ruins Park is located in a place called Xiaolingwei, outside the Zhongshan Gate of Nanjing. Over 600 years ago, ‘Xiaolingwei’ was the designation of an elite military unit of the great Ming Empire, a status comparable to that of the royal guards within the capital. At that time, Xiaolingwei was a royal forbidden area, with nearly 6000 elite soldiers stationed here. Civil and military officials were required to dismount and walk upon arrival. Such solemnity and reverence were due to one reason only: this was the entrance to the Xiaoling, the tomb of the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang. The park is open all year round, accessible 24 hours a day.
