Xie Tiao, a representative figure of Chinese landscape poetry, served as the governor of Xuancheng and was deeply fond of the scenery of Qingshan in Dangtu, praising it as the ‘capital of landscapes’. He often visited and composed poetry under the double banners of five horses, and built a residence on the southern slope of the mountain, known as Xie Gong’s Residence. In front of the residence, there is a small pond, said to be dug by Xie Tiao himself, known as Xie Gong’s Pond, also referred to as Xie Gong’s Well. The pond water is abundant, with a sweet and cold taste, and has never dried up. It is home to the ‘millennium red scales’, historically known as ‘Yuan Hui Ancient Well’. After his wrongful death in prison, the local people transformed his residence into a memorial temple, which Li Bai visited multiple times to mourn. The temple is open all year round from 09:00 to 16:00, with specific business hours subject to daily opening conditions.
