Xu Garden is a Han Chinese ancient garden architecture that was originally constructed during the Qing Dynasty. Located within Slender West Lake Park in Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province, it is characterized by the unique feature of ‘a garden within a garden’. Xu Garden was built on the former site of ‘Peach Blossom Hollow’, situated at the northern end of the Slender West Lake’s Long Causeway and Spring Willows, which was the original site of Han Garden’s Peach Blossom Hollow in the early Qing period.
The garden features a lotus pond constructed with yellow stones, with winding waters outside and a pond inside, connected to the lake water. Beyond the pond lies the pavilion, named ‘Listening to Orioles’, inspired by Du Fu’s verse ‘Two orioles sing amid the willows, a line of egrets ascends to the blue sky’. The entire courtyard is orderly yet full of variety. Passing Xu Garden and standing on the Little Red Bridge, one can see the towering Xiaojin Hill and the lake water suddenly expanding. Although Xu Garden is not large, covering an area of 0.6 hectares, its structure is well-proportioned, and the courtyards are arranged in a harmonious and well-distributed manner. It includes attractions such as the Listening to Orioles Pavilion, the Spring Grass Pond and the Pavilion of Chanting, and the Sparse Peak Pavilion, which combine exquisite architectural structures and exquisite carving arts, fully reflecting the wisdom and talent of the ancient Han working people. In front of the Listening to Orioles Pavilion, there are two iron cauldrons on display, said to be objects used to control water during the Southern Dynasties’ Xiao Liang period, and there is a stele with the inscription ‘The Record of Iron Cauldrons’, believed to be a relic from the Southern Dynasties’ Liang period, dating back more than 1,400 years.
