Wuliu Hall is located in Yanjun Alley in the urban area. It is a complex of residential buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The complex spans three historical periods: Ming, Qing, and modern times, representing the characteristics and styles of ancient residential buildings in Zhenjiang. The five tamarisks in the courtyard echo the meaning of Wuliu Hall. Wuliu Hall originally had seven rows of bungalows and a library. Currently, three rows of bungalows and a library are under on-site protection. The first row is the nanmu hall. The second row is the inclined hall. The third row is the attic hall. All are hard mountain-style bungalows with three bays in width. The nanmu hall is a Ming Dynasty building. The beams and columns are all made of nanmu. The beams are large in size. The columns are prism-shaped. There are curls on the top. It is a beam-lifting structure. There is no ridge column on the gable side of the secondary bay. This example of the relics from the Song and Yuan dynasties is extremely valuable. The inclined hall was built in the early Qing Dynasty. The entire house stands obliquely and is not on the same central axis as the nanmu hall, which is quite unique. The attic hall is connected to the inclined hall by a corridor. Attics are attached to the east and west sides, which is rather unique. The library is also named Youjing Tower. It has two floors. It takes the meaning of Tao Qian’s poem ‘Travel and enjoy in the Six Classics’. It is the place where Tao Pengxian stores books and writes. He once compiled books such as ‘Collection of Tang People in Runzhou’ here, which has certain academic value. The owner of Wuliu Hall, the Tao family, originally lived in Xunyang, Jiangxi Province, and later moved to Zhenjiang. Through manual labor of ‘silk reeling’, they gradually developed into a giant in the river silk industry. The Tao family is a descendant of Tao Qian, Mr. Wuliu. Therefore, the name ‘Wuliu Hall’ is inscribed to show respect for their ancestors. The specific business hours are subject to the opening status on the day.
