There were only three generations of monarchs in the Southern Tang Dynasty. Li Yu’s father and grandfather, the last monarch of the Southern Tang Dynasty, chose this place as their eternal resting place. Although this family, which was fond of reading and writing poems, did not leave many glorious achievements in Chinese history, their excellent quatrains like romantic affairs amazed later generations. The first monarch Li Sheng and the middle monarch Li Jing, as well as their queens, all lie sleeping in this small cemetery. Qinling Mausoleum is for Li Sheng and Shunling Mausoleum is for Li Jing. The scale is certainly not comparable to that of Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum and the Thirteen Tombs of the Qing Dynasty. However, the underground palace is still well-preserved. The internal structure and wall decorations present the ancient mausoleum culture more than 1,000 years ago. Although the mausoleum was visited by tomb robbers several times earlier, there are still many cultural relics rescued, which are extremely precious. In an exhibition hall in the cemetery, some unearthed objects are on display. Figurines, jade mourning books, pottery pieces and other treasures are important basis for determining the identity of the tomb owners. And from these, we can get a glimpse of various aspects of the Five Dynasties. In addition, the poems written by the monarchs of the Southern Tang Dynasty have been specially engraved into inscriptions and placed on the side for tourists to slowly appreciate the beauty of the words. Li Jing’s line ‘Whispers in dreams, the Jisai Pass is far away. In the small tower, the jade flute is played through, bringing a chill.’ Now it seems beautiful and graceful, but also makes people sigh.
