The Zhongshan Gate section of the Nanjing City Wall was built in the Ming Dynasty and has endured centuries of wind and rain. Its original site was the Chaoyang Gate on the east side of the imperial palace in the early Ming Dynasty. It was originally a barbican, which was not convenient for traffic. In 1927, when Zhongshan Cemetery Avenue was being constructed, the gate was demolished, the gate foundation was dug lower, and a new three-arched brick gate was rebuilt. On the middle archway is inscribed with the stone plaque of ‘Zhongshan Gate’. It is accessible by cars and is the main gate leading to Zhongshan Mausoleum. When the Anti-Japanese War broke out, Chinese defenders carried out a fierce Nanjing Defense Battle here. In 1996, Zhongshan Gate in Nanjing became the entrance for the Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway into Nanjing City. Together with the ‘Jinling Pixiu’ outside the city gate, it has become one of the main symbols of Nanjing City. Opening hours: Open from 08:30 to 17:00 all year round. The specific business status is subject to the opening situation on that day.
