Li Bai, a prominent poet of the Tang Dynasty, was deeply fond of the landscape around Caishi Jetty and often visited the area, composing poems such as ‘Mooring at Night at Niuzhu Recalling the Past’, ‘Gazing at Tianmen Mountain’, ‘NiuZhu Jetty’, ‘Six Poems of Hengjiang’, and ‘Song on the Road’. It is said that Li Bai died after falling into the river while admiring the moon on a boat, drunk. A tomb (clothing and hat tomb) was built in his honor. During the Northern Song Dynasty, a temple dedicated to Li Bai was constructed, and in the fifth year of the Ming Dynasty’s Zhengtong period (1440), Taibai Tower and Qingfeng Pavilion were built. The current Taibai Tower, built in the second year of the Qing Dynasty’s Guangxu period (1876), is a key cultural relics protection unit in Anhui Province. In 1986, the People’s Government of Ma’anshan converted a group of Qing Dynasty buildings next to Taibai Tower into exhibition rooms for the Li Bai Memorial Hall. The memorial hall includes Taibai Tower, Li Bai Temple, Qingfeng Pavilion, Taibai Hall, Tongfeng Pavilion, Qi Jing Pavilion, Xianlv Hermitage, Songyun Residence, Diecui Tower, and Yinxiang Hall, as well as stele corridors and Chenxiang Garden, covering an area of over 10,000 square meters. The memorial hall houses more than 40 sets of Li Bai’s collections from home and abroad since the Ming and Qing dynasties, including 7 rare editions, over 700 calligraphic and painting works since the Ming Dynasty, and hundreds of cultural relics from various dynasties; it also has a Li Bai research materials room. Li Bai Temple displays a 2.2-meter-high statue of Li Bai made of nanmu wood. The hall is open all year round from 08:30 to 17:00.
