Jiefang Gate was completed in 1954 and is an important entrance to Xuanwu Lake. The section of the Ming City Wall from Xuanwu Gate to Taiping Gate along the shore of Xuanwu Lake is the relatively long, intact and tall section of the city wall existing in Nanjing. In 1952, in order to facilitate the traffic inside and outside this section of the city wall and meet the needs of air defense evacuation, Nanjing City decided to build Jiefang Gate near the junction of Taicheng at the foot of Beijige and the Ming City Wall. After renovation, a city wall museum was built at this gate. Near this gate are Jiming Temple and Xuanwu Lake Park. The rich cultural heritage is integrated with mountains, waters, cities and forests.
