The Jiangnan Naval Academy was a military school established by the Qing government during the Westernization Movement. It was founded in the 16th year of Guangxu (1890). As a base for cultivating scientific and technological talents. There are three classes in the academy: navigation, marine engineering, and torpedo. Each session has about 120 students. Most of the teachers are British. The courses include English, machinery, navigation, astronomy, etc. In April 1898, 18-year-old Lu Xun was admitted to the marine engineering class of this academy. In November of the same year, due to his dissatisfaction with the chaotic school spirit, he angrily dropped out. After the 1911 Revolution, the Jiangnan Naval Academy was closed and changed into the office location of the Ministry of the Navy. Later, it became the location of the naval officer school, the Ministry of the Navy of the National Government, the naval command and other units. Today, there are buildings such as the chief inspector’s building, the office building for British teachers, and the gate of the Ministry of the Navy of the National Government.
