Baijia Lake is located in Jiangning District, Nanjing, covering an area of nearly 170 hectares. According to the Ming Dynasty records ‘Wanli Jiangning County Annals’, it was referred to as ‘Baijia Lake’, which was later corrupted to ‘Baijia Lake’ possibly due to its phonetic resemblance and shape. The lake shore is winding, earning it the saying ‘nine bends and eighteen channels’. Legend has it that there is a small white dragon in the lake, and villagers built a White Dragon Temple on the south shore of the lake to offer sacrifices, which no longer exists today. Now, one of the two long bridges in the lake is named White Dragon Bridge (the other is called Lanwan Bridge). The lake is open all year round and accessible 24/7.
