Tongan Confucius Temple in Xiamen, Fujian

The Tong’an Confucius Temple is located on the west bank of the Dongxi River in Tong’an County Seat. It was originally a place for offering sacrifices to Confucius in past dynasties. Now it has been rebuilt into the Tong’an District Museum, displaying historical traces of Tong’an since the Western Han Dynasty, cultural relics of past dynasties, as well as stone carvings and steles collected from all over the county. It is known as the “Terracotta Army of Tong’an”.
The Tong’an Confucius Temple was first built in the Five Dynasties. The existing building is the Dacheng Hall rebuilt in the 32nd year of Emperor Qianlong’s reign in the Qing Dynasty (1768) by Wu Yong, the county magistrate at that time. The woodcarvings are rich in content. More than 300 stone carvings and steles from the Song Dynasty to the present in Tong’an are exhibited in the stone carving exhibition field, showing distinct local characteristics, which really broadens people’s horizons.

The Tong’an Museum has two exhibition halls and an open-air display garden. The Dacheng Hall exhibition hall consists of three parts: “Exhibition of Important Historical Traces in Tong’an”, “Exhibition of Historical Celebrities in Tong’an”, and “Exhibition of Cultural Relics in the Collection”. The exhibition of historical traces reflects important historical events and the activities of important historical figures in ancient Tong’an from the Neolithic Age to the period of the New Democratic Revolution through pictures, texts and cultural relic materials.
