The Palace Museum Kulangsu Gallery of Foreign Artifacts, the first themed branch established by the Palace Museum in a local area, was officially opened. The 219 precious foreign cultural relics on display for the first time reflect the grand occasion of political, economic and cultural exchanges between China and other countries and regions. Take a boat from Sanqiutian Wharf to Kulangsu. Walk along the iconic palace lanterns of the Palace Museum by the coast, and you can see a Western-style building.

This is the site of the Palace Museum Kulangsu Gallery of Foreign Artifacts – the former site of Kulangsu Salvation Hospital and Nurses’ School. This former site was founded in 1898 by John Abraham Otte, a Dutch-American. It is not only a national key cultural relic under the sixth batch of protection but also a heritage site for Kulangsu’s application for World Heritage status. In November 2014, the Xiamen Municipal Government and the Palace Museum signed the “Cooperation Framework Agreement for the Construction and Operation of the Kulangsu Gallery of Foreign Artifacts”.

The cultural relic site was repaired and renovated, making it a medium-sized museum with an exhibition hall of 2,800 square meters and a modern exhibition space with constant temperature and humidity. In the future, the number of foreign cultural relics on display in the Palace Museum Clock Gallery, the planned Gallery of Foreign Artifacts in Yanxi Palace and the Kulangsu branch will reach 1,300 pieces, and 10% of the foreign cultural relics in the museum’s collection will be available for public display.
