Overview of the exhibition hall. The first theme park to interpret urban history through an interactive way of miniature models + mechanical art + digital multimedia. The exhibition hall contains seven themed exhibition areas, more than 500 miniature architectural landscapes, 10,000+ miniature figures, and more than 70 interactive experiences, interestingly connecting Shanghai’s urban change history from 1559 to 1937.
Revealing of the exhibition hall. Sea Encounter Garden: A large 6*13-meter sand table is placed here. On it is presented a panoramic view of Yuyuan Garden and the Temple Fair of Chenghuang Temple restored in a 1:30 ratio. Combined with a four-minute holographic projection show, it interprets the origin and changes of Yuyuan Garden and the market scenes of ‘garden, temple, and market’ in the Chenghuang Temple area.

Confluence of Rivers and Seas: ‘Confluence of Rivers and Seas’ restores the prosperous and noisy commercial atmosphere of Shiliupu Wharf on the banks of the Huangpu River. The 13 types of sand ships and steamships on display, combined with induction sound control and digital light and shadow, let you listen to dialects and feel the vastness.

Battle of the North Gate: ‘Battle of the North Gate’ restores the scene on January 6, 1855, when the Small Sword Society uprising army, which had been defending Shanghai County for 16 months, resisted the attack of the Qing-French coalition forces and finally achieved victory. Through the fusion interpretation of new media sound, light, and electricity, the audience can step into the battle scene at that time.

Hua District: Here is the first-generation industrial technology achievement exhibition in Hua District. Through various interactive amusements, historical scenes such as the old Shanghai South Railway Station that no longer exists after being bombed by the Japanese army, Shanghai’s first national power generation enterprise – Nanshi Electric Light Plant, and the earliest and largest professional beverage factory in China – Qinle Soda Factory are reproduced.

Modern Times: ‘Modern Times’ presents important buildings and historical scenes in historical and cultural conservation areas such as the Bund historical and cultural conservation area, Yuyuan Road historical and cultural conservation area, and Hengshan Road-Fuxing Road historical and cultural conservation area through technologies such as electronic sensing, mechanical dynamics, digital real-time interaction, and multimedia interpretation.

Special Chapters: Enchanted Tales & Remembering the Past: ‘Enchanted Tales’ and ‘Remembering the Past’ are two special exhibitions customized by Taiwanese new media artist Lin Junting for ‘Four Hundred Years of Magic City’. ‘Enchanted Tales’ allows old objects to tell the strange tales and diverse lives of Greater Shanghai through the combination of light and shadow and the misplacement of object proportions.

Remembering the Past restores a tram, that is, a trolley. After checking tickets and boarding, the kaleidoscopic visual wonders in the window take you through the past and present lives of the Magic City.
