Tanyuan Garden is the private garden of Li Liufang, a famous litterateur in the Ming Dynasty and one of the ‘Four Masters of Jiading’. The whole garden is compactly and appropriately laid out, with a gourd-shaped pool in the center and halls standing around. The caves and gullies wind and turn gracefully. The winding corridors run through the whole garden, reflecting the characteristics of private gardens in the south of the Yangtze River.

It achieves the garden effect of the corridor leading along with the bridge and the scenery changing with every step. Wandering in the garden is like being in a painting. The design of Tanyuan Garden adopts the method of layer-by-layer shielding and dialysis to create a visual effect of a winding path leading to a secluded place and being faintly visible. With the waterscape as the center, it uses the pattern of ‘one center and multi-sided extension’.

It is separated from the noisy downtown area of the city by high walls. The landscapes such as mountains, waters, buildings and plants are spatially distributed in a natural way. In a limited space, it gives full play to the artistic principle of ‘seeing the big from the small’ and creates a garden pattern of ‘a forest in a short distance and many beautiful sceneries’. Tanyuan Garden is located in the town center of Nanxiang Town.
