The Tianchan Yifu Stage was previously known by various names such as Xinxin Stage, Xing Stage, Jing Stage, and Yingxian Xinxin Stage. The name “Tianchan” is derived from a mythological tale of a moon rabbit that nibbles at the osmanthus branches in the moon, symbolizing the intention to outshine the Dangui First Stage (another renowned stage at the time). In 1930, the name “Tianchan” was transferred to the Daxin Stage, located at the intersection of Fuzhou Road and Yunnan Road. Since its naming, renowned performers from both the north and south have been particularly fond of this endlessly charming stage. Within this century, masters of the theatrical world have competed to perform here, leading to the saying in the opera circle that “one cannot become famous without performing at Tianchan.”
