The Wansheng Stone Forest scenic area has a rock formation age of about 465 to 600 million years ago. It is the oldest stone forest in China. The scenic area has six functional areas: ‘Exploring the wonders of dragon scales, popularizing geological park knowledge, presenting romantic scenes, displaying Hong Miao culture, experiencing sports competitions, and protecting the original ecological stone forest’.
It has formed three unique strange stones: ‘stone fan, stone drum, and stone turtle’; three strange stone and forest combinations: ‘water stone forest, fog stone forest, and cave stone forest’; and three popular science sections: ‘Sinoceras Valley, fossil corridor, and geological park’. There are also twelve core scenic spots such as ‘Peach Blossom Dock, Dragon Scale Sea of Flowers, and Miao Palace’. On October 29, 2012, it was awarded the national AAAAA-level tourist scenic area. Here, the individual paleontological fossils are large and have distinct outlines and colors. They are Sinoceras formed in the Cambrian period. Most of them are tan-yellow. Some are exposed on the surface of the stone, and some are embedded in the stone. They have high scientific research and ornamental value for studying the geological evolution and marine biological evolution of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the mountainous areas on the southeastern edge of the Sichuan Basin. Here, a group of Miao compatriots known as ‘Red Head Miao’ have lived for generations. They are good at singing and dancing. Traditional festivals and ethnic dances such as the Miao people’s mountain-treading festival, Ruosuo Festival, Lusheng dance, and wooden drum dance are renowned. Especially the Miao people’s mountain-treading festival held in May every year is famous in Chongqing and Guizhou.Opening hours: From November 1 to December 31, it is open from 09:00 to 16:30; from March 1 to October 31, it is open from 08:30 to 17:00; from January 1 to February 29, it is open from 09:00 to 16:30.
