The Apeng River originates from Lichuan, Hubei Province. It is a river in China that flows from east to west. It passes through Qianjiang and reaches Youyang, and empties into the Wujiang River at the ancient town of Gongtan. With a total length of 249 kilometers, it is the largest tributary of the Wujiang River. In Qianjiang, the Apeng River breaks through high mountains and lofty ranges and flows unrestrainedly.

The mountains are high, the valleys are deep, and the cliffs face each other, forming a unique canyon scenery. Among them, Shenguixia Gorge is particularly unique. The Grand Canyon (Shenguixia Gorge) has a total length of 38.9 kilometers and is a typical high-quality scenic spot. The Shenguixia Gorge river meanders like a snake, presenting a continuous ‘S’ shape. There is almost no straight section of the river.

There are 27 bends and 28 gates (the local term for ‘narrow strip of sky’) throughout the journey. The large number of bends is truly rare in canyons. The poet sighed: ‘When the boat reaches the cliff, it seems there is no way forward. Turning the bow, there is another bend.’ This can be truly regarded as a vivid portrayal of Shenguixia Gorge. On the cliffs, there are hanging stalactites everywhere.

Some are on the mountainside, and some are on the water surface, presenting a thousand postures and grotesque shapes. Relatively typical unique landscapes include the lion watching the tide, the ape man breastfeeding, beef liver and horse lung, ganoderma guardian, ganoderma garden, elephant trunk sucking water, monkey fishing for the moon, dragon claw, fairy field, etc. The water in the Shenguixia Gorge reservoir area is as deep as 85 meters.

Although it reduces the relative height difference of the canyon, it adds charm to the water. Except during flood outbreaks when the water in the upper reaches of the canyon becomes turbid, at other times, the river water is as green as jade, creating the unique scenery of green pools and secluded gorges of Shenguixia Gorge. The superior water quality nourishes excellent fish species in Shenguixia Gorge.

There are as many as dozens of fish species here. When cooked, they are naturally fragrant and free of muddy smell. There are mandarin fish (commonly known as sow shell), yellow catfish, silver carp, soft-shelled turtle, etc.
