The Lesser Three Gorges of the Jialing River, with Beibei as its core, consist of Libi Gorge, Wengtang Gorge, and Guanyin Gorge, spanning a total length of 27 kilometers. The upper section is Libi Gorge, also known as Niuni Gorge or Tongkou Gorge, located in the area of Hechuan Yanjing Town, and measures 3 kilometers in length. Within the gorge, the river flows rapidly, with unfathomable depths, and the gorge’s sides are lined with towering peaks, steep and serene, featuring magnificent landscapes such as Juliang Beach, Lion’s Tomb, Laughing Monk, Niuni Cave, Monkey Stone, and Mozhi沱.
The middle section is Wengtang Gorge, also referred to as Hot Spring Gorge or Wengtang Gorge, situated in the Jinyun Mountain section, and extends for 2.7 kilometers. Historically, a hot spring pool was built at the gorge’s mouth, known as Wengtang, hence the name. As one enters the gorge, the river roars and rushes, with whirlpools forming in layers, creating a majestic atmosphere; the gorge walls are no more than 200 meters apart, with cliffs standing tall as if carved by knives and axes; at the gorge’s waist, springs gush like boiling water, and clouds emerge from the rock, making it the most beautiful of the Lesser Three Gorges. The lower section is Guanyin Gorge, also known as Biwen Gorge, measuring 3.7 kilometers in length. At the gorge’s mouth, there stands a huge rock resembling a stone tablet, commonly called Biwen Stone, with an ancient temple named Guanyin Pavilion located high on the cliff nearby, from which the gorge derives its name. Guanyin Gorge’s banks are lined with towering cliffs and grotesque rocks, with the river meandering and twisting. It is open all year round from 06:00 to 22:00 and is a must-visit for photography enthusiasts.Jialing River’s Lesser Three Gorges Scenic Belt
