The Phoenix Trail is a long-distance hiking trail located in the South Lantau Country Park, officially opened on December 4, 1984. Encompassing the southern part of Lantau Island, the trail passes through Mui Wo, Pui O, Tong Fuk, and Ngong Ping, as well as the ridges of Phoenix Mountain and Sunset Peak, spanning a total length of 70 kilometers and divided into 12 sections, starting from Mui Wo. This trail connects multiple scenic spots on Lantau Island, including the Nanshan Planting Area, Phoenix Mountain, Po Lin Monastery, Dragon’s Back Garden, Tai O, and Tai Tong. Hikers can choose suitable sections for sightseeing, hiking, or camping.

The first five sections require crossing steep mountain paths, and visitors should assess their abilities and preferably explore in segments. Phoenix Mountain is the second-highest peak in Hong Kong, taller than its eastern counterpart, Sunset Peak. The main and subsidiary peaks are named Feng and Huang, respectively, hence the name Phoenix Mountain. Visitors can take the Lantau Island bus from Tung Chung to Ngong Ping and follow the signs to the Phoenix Viewing Sun Terrace. Those who have witnessed the sunrise on Phoenix Mountain are often awestruck by its grandeur.

The trail is open all year round from 00:00 to 23:59, with specific business hours subject to daily conditions. Essential tips: The signs are clear, with a marker every 500 meters and an indicator about every 5 kilometers. All signs are uniformly yellow; recognizing the color will prevent getting lost.

2. The route is clearly marked, whether on mountain paths or alongside concrete water channels, with only differences in width; even at night, it is very discernible.

3. There are numerous supply shops available at Mui Wo, Ang Ping, Tai O, Fan Lau, Shek Pik, Shuen Wan, and Pui O for replenishment.

4. There are many evacuation points available at Nam Shan, Pak Kung Au, Ang Ping, Sham Shui, Tai O, Shek Pik, Shuen Wan, and Pui O.

5. It is important to note that the first six sections are more challenging and require a high level of physical strength; the latter six sections are less difficult but require more foot strength; if walking in reverse, higher physical strength and foot strength are needed, so caution is advised.

6. The difficulty mark “*” is assessed based on standard physical strength, and as physical strength decreases, the difficulty will increase.

7. The reference time for each section is transcribed from the index provided by the Hong Kong government, not our actual time; however, based on our experience, high-difficulty journeys are generally completed according to the reference time, with no significant increase in speed, but for low-difficulty sections, speed can be improved.
