The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival is an annual event held in Pingxi District, New Taipei City, during the Lantern Festival. It has developed into a well-known festival across Taiwan in recent years, known as the ‘South Fireworks, North Sky Lanterns,’ making the sky lanterns one of the symbols of Pingxi. Many vendors in Pingxi Old Street and Shifen Old Street sell sky lanterns, priced at approximately 100 Taiwan dollars each. Purchasers can write their prayers and wishes directly on the lanterns using the frames and pens provided by the vendors. After writing, take the lantern to the railway track and ask the vendor to spread and secure the oil paper on the bottom of the lantern. Once lit, the lantern inflates quickly, and it’s important to take photos fast as it heats up. Releasing sky lanterns on the railway track is a great experience, but be especially mindful of trains. The festival is open from February 17th to February 24th, with specific business hours subject to the day’s operations.
