The Consulate is divided into two parts: the official residence on the hill and the consulate office at the foot of the hill. The official residence is a late Renaissance Baroque-style building, with red brick exterior, bamboo joint downpipes, stone carvings, and round arches that highlight the uniqueness of the Consulate of the United Kingdom in Takow. The first floor of the residence includes a cultural and creative shop, a viewing platform, and a courtyard. From the viewing platform, one can enjoy an unobstructed view of the sunset, while the second floor houses an exhibition room, which uses models, old maps, and a multi-threaded approach to immerse visitors in the rich history of Kaohsiung’s opening to foreign trade for over 100 years.
Visiting the Consulate’s official residence allows one to witness the evolution of colonial-style architecture in Taiwan. The best time to visit is in the afternoon to evening, to enjoy the picturesque Xizi Bay sunset. Opening hours are Monday-Tuesday, Thursday-Friday from 10:00 to 19:00; Saturday-Sunday from 09:00 to 19:00; and closed all day on Wednesday.
