The famous and time-honored wonder of surging waves – Shengong Rock, is a blackish-brown rock standing in the blue waves of Boao Port. It is a huge reef several meters above the sea surface. Through the ages, no matter how the wind blows and the waves pound, this group of rocks stands tall and firm without moving. Its imposing manner is majestic and sacred, so people praise it as ‘Shengong Rock’.
Surge wonder: The most vivid time for the surge wonder of Shengong Rock is a few hours after a rainstorm. Whenever there is a rainstorm and mountain torrents pour down, the water levels of Wanquan River, Longgun River and Jiuqu River will rise simultaneously, gather and flow down, surging towards Boao Port. At this time, the unyielding sea, with even greater momentum, raises huge waves one after another and rushes towards the surging flood of the three rivers head-on. At this moment, the huge waves coming from opposite directions just collide on Shengong Rock at the same time and turn into roaring water currents and rush towards the sea. The huge waves rushing from opposite directions collide recklessly round after round, shatter into pieces again and again, turn into currents again and again, roll and rotate, rush forward and collide backward, galloping around Shengong Rock. The scenery is extremely peculiar and magnificent.
Opening hours: Open all year round and all day long.
Must-see tips: Ancient and legendary tales: According to legend, due to the collapse of the four sides of the sky, there is unextinguished fire on the earth, continuous floods, and ferocious beasts and birds harming the people. Nuwa, who is kind and diligent in heaven, in order to relieve the suffering of the people, sets up a huge furnace and smelts stones of five colors to make up for the sky. When Nuwa was smelting stones, due to a momentary slip, a black stone fell down. This stone fell precisely at the estuary of Boao Port without deviation. As a result, this peculiar stone emerged here, and later generations call it ‘Shengong Rock’. The legend of this peculiar stone can be said to express the kind-hearted psychology and beautiful wishes of the ancients.
Poem ‘Shengong Rock Defending the Sea’ by Lu Peng, magistrate of Lehui County during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty: ‘The seawater gazes afar, boundless and indistinct. Who taught the holy stone to stand by the sea to defend it? This place has been a natural danger since ancient times. Where else can we find an impregnable fortress?’ The poem points out that Shengong Rock is a wonder of ‘natural danger and strategic location’, which seems to be scientifically reasonable.
