The China Grand Canal Museum is located in the Gongchen Bridge area of Hangzhou City, with the ancient Gongchen Bridge to its west. The architectural style of the museum is generally positioned as ‘traditional yet not retro.’ The museum mainly consists of one floor, with partial second floors and some basement areas. The first floor primarily houses the museum’s regular exhibition areas, which include four halls and one exhibition corridor. The second floor mainly serves as a library, audio-visual room, and offices, in addition to a semi-circular exhibition hall.

The exhibition area of the China Grand Canal Museum is divided into five halls, featuring exhibits such as ‘Canals on Earth, China Grand Canal,’ ‘The Excavation and Evolution of the Canal,’ and ‘Canal Culture.’ Each hall presents and explains the rich natural and cultural landscapes of the Grand Canal through images, artifacts, and models.

The China Grand Canal Museum is not a simple, conventional museum. On one hand, it is a large museum that comprehensively and multi-angle reflects and displays the natural characteristics and cultural essence of the canal. On the other hand, it is a collection and research center for canal artifacts and documentary materials, as well as a center for the study and display of canal culture.
