The Zhejiang Museum consists of two venues, the GuShan Branch and the WuLin Branch. The historic GuShan Branch is located at the southern foot of GuShan, comprising the main building, Zhejiang West Lake Art Museum, and the Wenlan Pavilion, which was once a royal library. The museum primarily exhibits artifacts from the Hemudu culture, such as pottery and lacquerware, Liangzhu culture jade and silk, Yue state bronze ware, and works by Zhejiang artists and calligraphers from the Ming and Qing dynasties.
The main building has three floors, housing galleries such as the Pottery Hall, Celadon Hall, and Lacquerware Hall. The first floor mainly displays pottery, while the second and third floors are dedicated to porcelain, with the second floor featuring Yue Kiln and Longquan porcelain, and the third floor showcasing porcelain from the Ming and Qing dynasties and later periods.
Adjacent to the east of the GuShan Branch, the Zhejiang West Lake Art Museum primarily displays calligraphy and painting works, along with two special exhibition halls: Huang Binhong Calligraphy and Painting Hall and Lv Xiaguang Art Museum, which are open for visits. Additionally, the museum’s main building and the West Lake Art Museum hold various temporary exhibitions不定期 throughout the year.
To the west, the Wenlan Pavilion is one of the seven pavilions that once housed the Siku Quanshu, an imperial collection of books during the Qing Dynasty. Although the Siku Quanshu is no longer present, the shelves that once held the books remain, along with samples of the Siku Quanshu and the process of recollecting the books after they were destroyed in war. The Wenlan Pavilion is a picturesque example of a typical Jiangnan courtyard architecture, well worth a visit.
The Xi Ling Seal Society is located nearby the GuShan Branch, and it is recommended for visitors interested in humanities to visit. The museum is open year-round from Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00-17:00; closed all day on Mondays; and during national holidays such as New Year’s Day, Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, Labor Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and National Day, it is open 09:00-17:00, closed on Mondays, and opens as usual on legal holidays, with closures postponed to the first day after the holiday.
