The earliest remains of Yishang Street can be traced back to the Eastern Jin Dynasty. In the Song Dynasty, it was called State Governance Main Street or Front Street of State Governance and Market Street. In the Ming Dynasty, it was called Front Street of Prefecture and Small Market Street. It is the only way from Huzhou prefectural government to the post house. As early as the middle of the Qing Dynasty, it had already been the main commercial district of Hucheng. It is named ‘Yishang Street’ because of the numerous second-hand clothing stores. After the Northern Expedition, these prosperous second-hand clothing stores gradually faded from people’s lives. However, Yishang Street has always been a prosperous area in Huzhou urban area and has become a symbol of the history of Huzhou’s old streets. After vigorous renovation in recent years, it has become a historical block landscape integrating multiple functions such as commerce, culture, leisure, entertainment, tourism and residence, which can fully reflect the traditional urban commercial culture, traditional waterfront residential culture and traditional Jiangnan urban features of Huzhou in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China. Open all year round and open all day.
