The Xinshi Ancient Town has a history of thousands of years. There are many Ming and Qing dynasty residential complexes, Juehai Temple, ancient bridges and so on. Residents build houses along the river and set up markets by the bridges, presenting a rich and typical Jiangnan style. The area around Xikou River Water Street is relatively concentrated with ancient buildings and is very well preserved, having considerable ornamental value.

Outside Xikou River, due to historical changes, it is difficult to find traces of history. Xikou River Water Street is laid out in an inverted Y shape. It starts from Chenjiatan in the south and reaches Zhuja Bridge in the north, with a length of about two Chinese miles. Records show that when there were many in the ancient town, there were 36 lanes and 72 bridges. Currently, 11 are relatively intact.

Among the existing three bridges on Xikou River Water Street, they are respectively Jiaxian Bridge, Huixian Bridge and Wangxian Bridge. On both sides of the water street, the arcade buildings built along the water over the generations basically maintain the characteristics of the old water town street in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China. Simple and elegant Shikumen wall gates, exquisite brick-carved dwellings, unique firewalls, and stone-built riverbanks and wharves.

Another attraction of the ancient town is the area around Juehai Ancient Temple, where there are ancient temples, old bridges, old business and pawnshops, Liuwang Temple, Juehai Ancient Temple, ruins of Guhuai Temple, etc. In addition, there are many museums and exhibition halls in the ancient town. When tired from strolling, there is a “Yuansong Mutton” in the north of the town. Have a bowl of fragrant mutton noodles.

The mutton noodles in Xinshi use the famous Hu sheep. The mutton is fresh and fragrant without any peculiar smell. It can also be regarded as a must-eat delicacy when coming to Xinshi. Opening hours: Open all year round from 08:30 to 16:30.
