The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum is located in the Zhongshan Scenic Area in the eastern suburbs of Nanjing. It is adjacent to Linggu Temple in the east and the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum in the west. The entire architectural complex is built according to the mountain terrain and is arranged on a central axis from south to north. The overall layout of the cemetery is in the shape of a ‘alarm bell’. The overall distribution of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum includes buildings such as the Fraternity Arch, tomb passage, mausoleum gate, stele pavilion, memorial hall and burial chamber.
At the entrance square of the mausoleum, there is a tall granite archway with the two golden characters ‘Fraternity’ on it. Going north past the Fraternity Arch is the nearly 400-meter-long tomb passage with a total of 392 stone steps and a drop of 73 meters. Proceeding along the tomb passage to reach the mausoleum gate, the top is covered with cyan glazed tiles, and on the lintel are the four large characters ‘For the Welfare of All’. Entering further is the stele pavilion, and continuing forward until reaching the memorial hall. To reach the top of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, one needs to climb a long flight of steps. After every section of steps, there is a platform for resting. There is a visual technique in the design here. When you look up from bottom to top, you only see steps and no platforms. When you look down from top to bottom, you only see platforms and no steps. You may pay attention and observe. On the fifth platform, there are two large tripods. One of the tripods still has a shell hole caused by the Japanese invasion. At the peak of the mountain is the main building of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum – the memorial hall, which is a palace-like building. In the middle of the top door is embedded a vertical plaque with the words ‘Upright Qi between Heaven and Earth’. In the center of the memorial hall is a seated statue carved from white marble, and the base is engraved with six reliefs. In the burial chamber, there are two sets of copper tomb doors. Inside the door is a circular burial chamber with a long tomb in the center. The burial chamber is not open to the public. Around the mausoleum, outside the mausoleum architectural complex, there are also commemorative buildings such as the Music Terrace, Guanghua Pavilion, Liu Huixie, Yangzhi Pavilion, Zhongshan Academy, Scripture Library, Xingjian Pavilion, etc. Opening hours: Closed all day on Mondays throughout the year; Open from 08:00 to 17:00 from Tuesday to Sunday throughout the year; Open from 08:00 to 17:00 on New Year’s Day, Spring Festival, Tomb-Sweeping Day, Labor Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and National Day. 1.
