Rugao Ancient City, situated in Rugao City, is a distinctive historical site characterized by its unique layout. The city is divided into two parts: the inner city and the outer city. The outer city, which is circular in shape, contrasts with the square-shaped inner city, creating an appearance reminiscent of an ancient coin.
The inner city boasts the Yudai River but lacks a city wall. Despite this, it is well-protected with six city gates. On the other hand, the outer city is encircled by the Haohe River and fortified with a city wall. In addition to its four city gates, it also features two water gates, located in the eastern and northern directions.
