Hangzhou Urban Construction Exhibition Hall is a testament to the city’s development through the ages, capturing the essence of its ancient, modern, and contemporary urban construction. This exhibition hall tells the story of Hangzhou’s profound and unique history.
Originally part of the old judicial institution in Hangzhou, some sections of the building were unfortunately demolished during later urban developments. The remaining structure, known colloquially as the ‘Red Building’ due to its distinctive red fair-faced brick facade, stands as the sole survivor of its kind. It documents the history of the judiciary’s independent exercise of power from administrative organs in Zhejiang and its evolution over time.
The existing structure spans approximately 474 square meters and is an example of classical-style architecture. It marks a departure from traditional wooden construction, opting instead for load-bearing brick walls, which is indicative of the advancement in building technology and a hallmark of modern Chinese architecture.
The exhibition hall is organized into seven distinct sections, utilizing a variety of display methods including pictures, texts, multimedia, and physical objects. It not only reflects the historical transformation of the century-old ‘Red Building’ and its surrounding areas but also encapsulates the development process of Hangzhou’s urban construction from ancient times to the present. This comprehensive display showcases the 2200-year history of Hangzhou’s city construction, adding a unique layer of humanistic landscape to the city.
