Xuntang Ancient Town Overview
The Xuntang Ancient Town, established in 1913, is situated in Xuntang Village, Huazhuang Town, Binhu District. Qian Fengshu, the administrative director of Xin’an Township at the time, initiated its construction to aid local villagers in their shopping needs. The town was meticulously planned along the river, and it flourished with a variety of businesses and shops.
Geographical Significance
Positioned by the Xuntang River and surrounded by water on three sides, the town earned its name ‘Xuntang Town’. It was a significant historical town in Wuxi and served as a major transportation route, connecting Huazhuang, Xuelang, Dafu, and Nanfangquan. This strategic location made it an important place for trade and a hub for people in southern Wuxi.
Preservation and Trade
Despite the ravages of war, the old street system of Xuntang Town has been remarkably well-preserved. The town is also known as a center for purchasing and processing silkworm cocoons, highlighting its continued economic relevance.
