The Mahayana Zen Temple, located in the middle section of Yutang Street, is a hermitage dedicated to the worship of Shakyamuni Buddha. Originally a thatched cottage, in 1915, monk Qingxiang of Huiji Temple initiated a fundraising campaign with overseas Chinese to transform the hermitage into a branch of Huiji Temple. In terms of the scale of the land occupied, it can be considered the largest among the hermitages of Mount Putuo. Its blue buildings and yellow walls are particularly eye-catching.
Its main hall, the Yuantong Treasure Hall, houses the ‘Water Moon Guanyin Statue’, which can be said to be a top-notch masterpiece among the statues of Guanyin Bodhisattva. The Water Moon Guanyin, one of the thirty-three forms of Guanyin, is known for its gorgeous attire and graceful posture, and is also referred to as the Eastern Mona Lisa or the Eastern Venus. Behind it is the Reclining Buddha Hall, where the reclining Buddha is a seven-colored painted statue of Shakyamuni Buddha lying on his side with his right hand supporting his ear. The Buddha’s body is 7.6 meters long, and his demeanor is peaceful and serene. In the center of the hall, there is also a Burmese white jade reclining Buddha statue. The Mahayana Zen Temple receives thousands of domestic and foreign believers and tourists every year, and the incense is always thriving. It is open all year round from 06:00 to 18:00.Mahayana Zen Temple
