Constructed in 1919, the Coastal Memorial Arch features a structure of four pillars and three gates, adorned with emerald green tiles and upturned eaves. The arch is graced with five layers of plaques inscribed with phrases such as ‘South Sea Sacred Land’, ‘Together Reaching the Other Shore’, ‘Precious Axe Lost in the Mists’, ‘Golden Cord of Enlightenment’, and ‘Turn Back is the Shore’, which were inscribed by prominent figures of the Beiyang Government including Li Yuanhong, Xu Shichang, and Feng Guozhang.
On the gate pillars, there are couplets engraved: ‘The sacred traces are inscribed in Mount Jia, where all beings of the nations are nurtured with joy; Buddha’s light rises over the island, calming the tides for a millennium.’, ‘Tides come and go twice a day, listen to their natural ebb and flow; mountains and stones of countless layers, do not mock them for being seemingly unaware.’, ‘Upon arriving at this mountain, if you have not yet visited the Universal Gate, you should first purify your intentions; when crossing that sea, if you wish to reach the other shore, you must turn back early.’
