The Guanyin Jump scenic spot is located on the southeast seaside of Longwan Hill in Putuo Mountain. It is composed of the ‘Guanyin Jump Sea Stone’ and the Western Pure Garden (also known as the Western Nunnery). It faces Luojia Mountain across the sea. The Guanyin Jump Sea Stone is huge and flat, on the verge of a perilous cliff, lying in the wind, seemingly about to fall but remaining still. According to legend, this stone was the leveraging stone when Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva first opened Putuo Mountain as a sacred place for spreading Dharma and leaped from Luojia Mountain. It is also said that this stone is the one stepped on by the Bodhisattva when looking at the sea, reflecting on herself, and cultivating and attaining perfection. Therefore, it is also known as the ‘Guanyin Sea-Gazing Stone’. Today, there are still the sunken footprints of the Bodhisattva on the top of this stone (see the picture), which is extremely remarkable and is one of the must-see sacred sites of Guanyin for believers coming to Putuo Mountain. Open all year round and all day.
