Also known as Xue Fucheng’s former residence and Residence of an Imperial Envoy, Xuejia Garden is located in Wuxi City. It is the residence of Xue Fucheng, a thinker, diplomat and representative figure of the early bourgeois reformists in the late Qing Dynasty. Today, there is still a blue background and golden character ‘Residence of an Imperial Envoy’ inscribed by Emperor Guangxu on the lintel of the former residence. The architecture combines Chinese and Western styles. The first four entrances on the central axis, namely the entrance hall, the sedan hall, the main hall and the back hall, are all Chinese-style buildings, while the revolving tower, the billiard building and the eastern residence are Western-style. The main hall is the main and most luxurious hall in the entire residence. You can see many brick carvings, wood carvings, gilded lighting fixtures and red lacquer painted embroidered silk all showing its grandeur. The largest existing revolving tower in China is also impressive. It is two stories high and in the shape of a ‘return’. In the middle is a patio. Currently, a restaurant has opened on the revolving tower. Interestingly, these were designed by Xue Fucheng himself. He used double-section and double-row columns to turn the nine-bay building that exceeded the regulations into three three-bay buildings, and also separated the revolving tower into the required five bays. It seems that this high official in the late Qing Dynasty also had a talent for being an architect. During summer and major festivals, night tours are sometimes held here. At that time, all the halls are lit up, and different opera performances can be seen in different halls.
