Xiao Jiuhua Temple is nestled by the scenic Yingyue Dou Lake in Pingwang, and was originally established during the Tang Dynasty, with reconstructions taking place in the Ming Wanli period. It covers an area of over a hundred acres and boasts more than 300 halls and pavilions, making it one of the renowned temples in the Suzhou area. The temple is particularly famous for the modern Buddhist leader, Master Taixu, who planted a laurel tree at the age of 16, took his monastic vows, and later gained fame throughout the Jiangnan region after practicing in Putuo and traveling abroad.
In recent years, Xiao Jiuhua Temple has restored and reconstructed the Mountain Gate Hall, Mahavira Hall, and the Hall of the Three Saints. Additionally, the Earth Storey Hall, Guanyin Hall, Bell and Drum Towers, and the Thousand Buddha Pagoda have been restored. Currently, the temple is in the process of restoring and rebuilding the Sutra Pavilion, Earth Storey Pavilion, Ten Thousand Buddha Pagoda, Buddha Recitation Hall, Release Pond, and the Memorial Hall for Master Taixu.
