Tongjin Bridge is located on the ancient canal of Dongdajie, at the intersection of the cross-shaped water system. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, it was a very prosperous silk trading area in Nanxun. When visiting Tongjin Bridge, one must not miss the small street called Sihuan Du, located to the south of the bridge, which is famous for its silkworm rearing and silk business.
Many poems describe the bustling trade on Tongjin Bridge, among which Cao Renhu’s from the Qianlong period is particularly straightforward and easily passed down by word of mouth: ‘Hearing that this year’s silk prices are good, many boats are trading at the mouth of Tongjin Bridge’ (from ‘Pu Xi Bamboo Branch Words’).
Constructed during the Song Dynasty, Tongjin Bridge underwent several renovations during the Qing Dynasty. It is a single-arch stone bridge, 28 meters long and 4 meters wide, with 33 steps up and down, making it a very famous bridge in Nanxun. If you come to Nanxun, please linger on Tongjin Bridge, overlook Sihuan Du, and imagine the prosperous trade scene of ‘villagers selling silk rushing to the market, people in the market so crowded they can’t move, and thousands of words and languages overwhelming the ears’ in the past. The opening hours and specific business status are subject to the actual opening conditions of the day.
