The concept of immersive theatre originated in the United Kingdom. Unlike traditional theatre, audiences are not confined to fixed seats to watch performers on stage but instead freely navigate a theatrical space, actively exploring the plot and fully immersing themselves in the theatrical environment. ‘Sleep No More’ is a classic example of this genre.
Regarding Sleep No More, the Shanghai version of Sleepless Night in Shanghai is set in the McKinnon Hotel of the 1930s. Located in a mysterious five-story building in the heart of Shanghai, it features over 90 dramatic spaces, more than 3,000 drawers, and cinema-level stage design. The McKinnon Hotel is a space-time where reality and dreams interweave.
Upon entering the McKinnon Hotel, audiences are given a ghostly white mask to transform into spirits, freely exploring the space, touching the hotel’s furnishings, perceiving different music and scents, and closely following performers to experience the characters’ emotions in an epic story, creating a unique journey. The plot, adapted from Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth,’ is a tragedy about power and jealousy. The ambitious Scottish general Macbeth, under the influence of three witches and his wife’s encouragement, murders his colleagues Banquo, King Duncan, and the noble Macduff’s wife and children, leading to his eventual downfall.
As the unique Asian version of Sleep No More, the Shanghai edition incorporates elements from ‘The Legend of the White Snake’ and ‘The Butterfly Dream.’ It is open all year round from 14:00 to 22:00, with business hours from 19:00 to 22:00 (Wednesday to Saturday) and 14:00 to 17:00 (Saturday to Sunday). Matinee entry times are 14:00, 14:20, and 14:40, with the performance ending at 17:00. Evening entry times are 19:00, 19:20, and 19:40, with the performance ending at 22:00.
